I’m Dr. John “Doc” Freeman—a onetime medical missionary who swapped Thai jungle clinics for the rolling fields of Bells, Tennessee. After ten years abroad, I came home determined to keep our region’s rural history from slipping away, so I began relocating and restoring endangered log buildings on this thirty-five-acre patch of Crockett County farmland. Today the settlement has grown to more than twenty structures, from a moonshine still shed and blacksmith shop to a working 1910 cotton gin and an 1890 one-room chapel.
Krista—my daughter and on-site co-host—helps me welcome guests to four bed-and-breakfast cabins, each between 100 and 180 years old. We’ve tucked in modern comforts such as central heat-and-air, private baths, and plush linens, yet left the hand-hewn logs, quilt-covered beds, and stone fireplaces just as the original homesteaders built them. A popular venue for weddings or events!
